Eragon (Because who doesn't need dragons with rampant stabby dwarves?)

Eragon (Because who doesn't need dragons with rampant stabby dwarfs?)

Kit here everyone! This is going to be a post by just me, with a rather simple topic-a book review! I’m going to be reviewing Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. So buckle up and pay close attention, because all things said by moi are worthwhile. Not insane. At all. Nope. I am going to be completely logical here. *clowns honking, cars crashing and babies wailing*

Overall, this book was extremely pleasing! It was a lot of the things that I enjoy-fantasy, dragons, magic, and lots of BOOM. The main plotline is this. In a world where a tyrant, rogue Dragon Rider has eradicated all good Riders, a farm boy comes across a polished stone in the forest. He thinks that it’s a precious stone, but it turns out to be a Dragon, and the responsibility of being the newest Rider is thrust onto him. He sets out into Alagaesia, not knowing that he’s going to have to make a choice about the power given to him very soon.  Let’s start with the things I enjoyed.

     Delicious Bits

  •         Eragon, the star of the show. He was a perfect little munchkin, and threw himself into the world of magic headfirst. Regardless of the swan dive into it, he was still written so that you could really tell when he was afraid or homesick. Eragon was a really good example of the heros we relate to the most-afraid, but brave. He could be a little bland sometimes, being too serious at times, but did I mention that he has a DRAGON? A blue dragon?! Basically perfection.
  • Speaking of the dragon that is perfection, let me introduce you to Saphira-sass extraordinaire! She literally makes the book come alive, and balances out Eragon’s seriousness with her dry humor. She was portrayed really well in the way that she spoke, you could tell she WAS a dragon when she talked, yet she had the really human side, including her emotions.
  • Brom. Or the old one as Saphira called him. He was hilarious. Although his vagueness as a mentor could be rather annoying sometimes, even though it was a vital part of his personality.
  • The way that the author wrote Eragon’s relationship with his powers was well written. He didn’t shy away from the magic, nor did he accept it all without questions. His curiosity was balanced with his cautious nature, and it was easy to understand the basic rules of the magic.
  • BLUE. SO.MUCH.BLUE. You might be thinking...woah Kit. Easy there. But NO. I will not be easy! I will be furiously celebrating BLUE. Because it is my favorite color and was used in all the things. The dragon was blue. The fire was blue. Eragon could have blue skin for all I know. BLUE.
      Disappointing Cons

  • The plot sometimes moved a little too quickly, and it was easy to get lost in somewhat meaningless descriptions. Although those were few.
  • When they reached the final point in the book, the most important one, it rushed through it rather quickly, and that could have been switched out with a few scenes earlier that were unneeded.
  • They left some questions unanswered about a few characters, supporting ones, but still interesting, and some about Brom himself.
  • Arya? She is obviously awesome so why so little of her? I won't spoil anything but *cough* romance? *cough*

All in all, Eragon was a really great book, and it was a reread actually. It’s the first book in the series, so a lot of the cons were fixed later on, but that will probably come in a different review. I definitely recommend the book to anyone who enjoys really good fantasy. It wasn’t very dark, which is something that I look for in my fantasy books. Also, for writers it is a good research book to learn on how to write an approach to magic. So go forward-my dragon lovers and magic writers! READ IT. NOW. Please?

Has anyone here read Eragon? What were your thoughts? Does anyone agree with me on BLUE? Don’t be afraid to share!
